WHAT IS A CRANIAL PROSTHESIS OR MEDICAL WIG?
A cranial prosthesis is a medical-grade wig prescribed by a physician to replace hair lost due to medical conditions or treatments. Unlike cosmetic wigs, cranial prostheses are designed for medical necessity, comfort, scalp sensitivity, and long-term wear, and may be eligible for insurance reimbursement.

Steps to Take:
Step 1:
Understanding insurance coverage can feel overwhelming, but our team is here to help guide you through the process with clarity and care. We provide general guidance on how insurance plans may offer coverage for medical-grade wigs, also known as cranial hair prostheses, and assist you in navigating the insurance reimbursement process.
Insurance Providers That May Offer Coverage*
-
TriCare
-
Blue Cross Blue Shield
-
Humana
-
Aetna
-
UnitedHealthcare
*Coverage varies by plan and is not guaranteed.
When contacting your insurance provider, it is important to use the correct terminology. Avoid referring to the unit as a “wig.” Instead, use the terms “Cranial Hair Prosthesis” or “Hair Replacement Unit,” depending on your insurance provider, as proper terminology can significantly impact benefit determination and reimbursement eligibility.
Our team is available to support you in identifying the benefits available within your network and ensuring the correct language and documentation are used throughout the process.
Step 2:
Questions to Ask Your Insurance Provider
When contacting your insurance company, consider asking the following questions to better understand your coverage:
-
“Does my insurance plan provide coverage for a cranial prosthesis?”
-
“What percentage of the cost is covered under my plan, and are there any benefit limits?”
-
“What exact wording is required on the physician’s prescription for a cranial prosthesis?”
-
“Which HCPCS billing code is required to be listed on the receipt or invoice for reimbursement?”
Step 3:
Now Visit your Primary Doctor or Dermatologist and OBTAIN A PRESCRIPTION
If you're experiencing hair loss, it's important to visit your doctor and receive a diagnosis for any underlying medical conditions. Your doctor can provide a prescription for a cranial prosthesis, which can be used to purchase a wig. When purchasing the wig, make sure the invoice lists it as a cranial prosthesis with the correct medical code. We can submit the prescription for the medical wig to be paid in full or you can then submit the invoice to your insurance company for reimbursement

WE SUBMIT YOUR INSURANCE CLAIM
We call your provider for pre-approval before buying online to confirm coverage, even if they are not listed on your benefits policy.
Make sure if you call, the term "wig" is considered cosmetic, so using the medical term when inquiring about coverage is crucial. To purchase a cranial prosthesis, you will need the following documents:
1. A prescription from your doctor (we cannot call without this)
2. Jessy J Cranial Prosthesis sales receipt that includes the HCPCS billing code and Tax ID
3. Completed insurance claim/Superbill
4. A DME claim (if required by your insurance)
Make sure to keep copies of all invoices or sales receipts for your cranial prosthesis. Also, please note that portions of unpaid items by insurance may be tax deductible
GOT DENIED?
